Friendly staff, not hassling.Room usual problems, have breakfast well before 11 on nice roof terrace above chaos. Good vfm

22-26/1/26 Room 136
We three middle aged guys from London arrived at Sphinx Airport in the late Thursday afternoon.
We got our Visas at the MISR kiosk for $25 each, paying by card (we were under the impression that were needed to take cash).
Armed with eSIMs we sought an uber for Egy£ 490 (£7.71). On leaving the building the usual chaos of taxi peddlers included one who was the one that Uber booked! On walking to his car suddenly the price was £20! He said ALL taxis were £20. After a lot of polite having he reduced it to $20 (still twice the uber rate) saying it would take him an hour.
We brought all our (hand) luggage into the car itself and not the boot.
As we left the airport the uber app offered another driver.. obviously our one rejected our request, he basically diddled us….
It did take an hour to get to this hotel which involved queues, lane jumping, beeping, unlit tuktuks, swerving motorcyclists. Most cars had dents or scratches on them.
We were dropped off outside the hotel, up the stairs and took the right lift which went to the 12th floor. The floors themselves whizzed past as there was no internal door…beware!
On arrival at reception we were greeted by a very friendly Mahmoud who scanned all our passports and talked us through breakfast (included) 7-11.
We found our room 136 at the end of the corridor. It was big, three separate beds (a large single between two doubles). There were no towels so one of us returned to reception to get one each. There were no hooks in the room either to keep things off the floor.
The hotel had a Captive Wi-Fi system which cut out when not used for a while so had to log in regularly which was a pain.
The wall mounted TV had a satellite STB which was stuck on one channel (swapping batteries did not help as the 'Made in China' remote microswitches were all worn out). We gave up exploring channels to find anything in English. I disconnected both devices from the mains as they were on standby and useless anyway.
A new A/C unit was available but never used as this was January.
A working fridge was present, we did not use it as there was no kettle. Luckily it was a quiet fridge overnight. Bottled water is available to be bought but we refilled a bottle from the water station in the building lobby by the stairs.
An ashtray was supplied in the room but it did not smell of cigarettes thankfully. We do not smoke.
There was a distinctly lack of hooks and surfaces to put things on, especially in the showerroom where there was only one towel rail for three people. Only one bin in the shower-room, none in the room.
The plugless sink had Sunsilk shampoo sachets and a small box of soap supplied. The water pressure The shower head was very low on the wall (and therefore uncomfortable to stand under) so I unscrewed it and rescrewed it into a higher rawl plug - that did the job! The water pressure in general was good enough to jet out razors, although on our third morning only a trickle as there was a problem with the water tank emptying and was pressure low. It was all sorted by 10am thankfully.
We slept well nights 1 and 2 with only the occasional dog bark. I slept through 05:25 prayers completely one morning. I did not need earplugs at all. Other room users were quiet although occasionally the chairs in the above rooftop restaurant could be heard dragging during the morning.
Breakfast was between 7 and 11 and was fine, delivered to the pleasant sunny rooftop terrace with background Egyptian music. It consisted of their puffed up bread, a tasty plate of cold bean stew and felafel, halva, orange, banana, happy boy cheese, cut up emmenthal cheese. Coffee and tea was refillable thankfully (see below - only if early!). Other mornings had different weather so dress or sit appropriately.
There was a lack of tissues at breakfast. Sticky fingers after eating the orange were not easily cleaned. I asked for a tissue and the wrapped up cutlery had to be unwrapped. There was also s small issue of cleaning tables after people left. The staff, all friendly, should be more attentive. For a while a table cleaning cloth was on the floor by the bar for a long time, plus tissues and litter which did not give as good impression.
The chaos of below was a long way away and the views across the smoggy city were inviting us to explore. Many rooftops had rubble and building debris, apparently to reduce storm rain overflowing drainage systems and also to insulate the 'penthouse' properties from the sun and the cold!
The second morning we arrived later at 10 (no music just distant train horns) and had the usual breakfast including the 'foola' bean stew, but on asking for the second round of bread and teas/coffees (Nescafé style) at 10:45. The bread was delivered but then the staff disappeared completely with no drinks to be seen. They returned at 10:58 to clear the table, we reordered the drinks again. However Nabil returned at 11:02 to confirm the order but as it was after 11 Nabil charged us around 40 each which was a bit naughty .... oh well... we were not in the mood for an argument that early in the day.... then the waitress appeared with a phone with 'now you must pay' translated on it. E£ 130! Nabil was called over to sort it and it was 40,40,35 plus 15 service. My friend was not happy but calmed down as still too early for an argument. We paid gracefully and everything was fine with a smile.....Oh well. It is a casual public restaurant after 11, hence prices and tipping. It is still quite pleasant on top overlooking most of Cairo. There seem to be no other places like it around.
The breakfast was technically only £1 each on top of the room price anyway so still very good value.
I did notice that the bins by the pillars had not been emptied since the day before. No big deal but it does not take a lot to do the job.
I think that once the owners realised we were not big spenders (on their guided tours they were selling in their brochure) they made other ways to help their profit margins....lesson learnt.... get up earlier for breakfast!
There were plenty of fire detectors in the corridors.
We decided to stay a fourth night, looked up on Bkg.c to find the same prices we had paid when booking from London (£26/$36/£E1671/ night inc bf & taxes). I went to reception (at 23:25 to find a new receptionist, Ahmed, told him our plan and how we could save them Bkg.c commission and changing sheets (we were not bothered about no changing in four nights). Ahmed looked up the piece asked quite the best deal at 1860 discounted to 1800. I said we'd sort it in the morning.
We had an earlier breakfast than usual to avoid extra charges after 11 but left a 20 tip for the young waiter.
Afterwards we sorted another night's stay with yet another receptionist, Carlos, for £E1800 a night including tax & breakfast (which was slightly cheaper than booking through b.c).
Our third night went well and we checked out in the morning happy to get an Uber direct to Giza (170 + 30 tip).

Good value

Basic, affordable hotel on the 12th floor of an old building with government offices. Location is convenient to explore the city center; felt safe although the area is rundown. Friendly receptionists. Slept well, good mattresses (firm), quiet room (windows closed) overlooking a school. Nice rooftop terrace. Paid for coffee (instant), no breakfast. Negatives: arranged airport pickup with them, no-one showed up. Stayed during renovations, terrible smell (paint solvent) and dust everywhere.

Great choice in the heart of Cairo

Good location, close to Tahrir Square, in the center. Friendly, kind and reliable staff. The structure is a bit dated, but the rooms are large and clean, as is the bathroom. Local breakfast (150 LE) with a spectacular view of the city: the hotel is located on the twelfth floor, which also helps to dampen traffic noise. If you want you can also have dinner. The affordable prices ($41 for a triple room) make it a choice to consider. No negative surprises. The hotel also offers tours of all kinds.

Good hotel in perfect location

We stayed at the Hotel Osiris again after many years. In the meantime, the owner has changed. Sustainable investment was made in the rooms and sanitary facilities. Located in a commercial building on 12th floor. Floor. It is a simple hotel but very clean and well decorated. It is quiet and there are numerous rooms. The roof terrace has also been redesigned. There is a small simple restaurant on the terrace. The view is breathtaking. It's wonderful. We would definitely go there again. We booked 35 USD for a double room for two people including breakfast. A very good value for money.
