I would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants to come to Cuenca and stay at a hotel with the best staff ever!

This is one of the best hotels that you can possibly stay in and Cuenca for a low price where you get that breakfast and the staff is absolutely amazing! Unfortunately I had two friends staying there that didn't seem to care about obeying the rules, one of that you cannot smoke in the rooms which they did anyway. Among other things they were asked to leave and the staff was amazing when they had to ask them to leave.

Check inn bed and breakfast - BedBugs - horrible

Stayed here with a friend 1 night, reported bed bugs the next day. We were moved to a new room. He was aware of the problem already and just lied and said “the plastic around all mattresses was because customers piss and s*** on the beds” it is actually because he has had his building treated so many times for bed bugs. Found out all my stuff is infected, the safest thing to do is throw away everything I own and buy new, not worth taking the chance of bringing this home with me.
Feel sorry for the guy but people need to know that if you stay here all you clothes, bags will be infected and you will transfer them everywhere you go and back to your home and they are ridiculously hard to kill once they have spread.

Stayed during a turbulent time

Unfortunately we stayed here as the transport/fuel strikes started which did somewhat impact our stay here. There were two mornings that breakfast was not available because the staff could not get to work. The guy on reception (who's name I forget) did his best to keep us safe and happy and kept us informed as and when the situation outside changed.
Pros:
•Good central location. (Not so great during the strikes, one block away from the main Square, but it did mean we had front row seats to watch events unfold and the tear gas fly from the roof top terrace)
• laundry service available
• really helpful/ friendly reception staff (even when the poor guy had been stuck there for two days unable to go home because of the strikes)
• common area with satellite TV
• guests have use of basic kitchen
•breakfast is included
•has a lift
• it's cheap
•clean
•bottles of water and beer available to buy.
Cons:
• big old building so every little noise travels.
• old building so there's no guarantee you'll get a hot shower. One shower out of the five I took during our stay was hot.
• the shower hoses just hang from the wall so you have to jam the hose into the storage caddy and hope that it doesn't come out.
• there is no where to hang your clothes or towel outside of the cubical so when the hose falls from where you've jammed it into the storage caddy your stuff is going to get wet.
• the "cooker" is just a four burner camping stove and there aren't always matches to light it. You could try to ask for more but if they've already put three boxes up there in one day you won't get anymore.
• poor quality wifi, even in common areas where its meant to be stronger.
•single glazed metal frame windows don't block any street noise (or tear gas).
•breakfast is half a very thin omelette, a hard/stale roll, banana and a weak tea or coffee.

Good value

Hotel owner extremely accomodating and kind! Gave us good tips for onward travel and let us chill there whilst waiting for our bus. This was a saving grace as I was I'll from a dodgy Indians. Lovely rooftop terrace with view of city!

Never ever again

The hostel itself is quite nice and also the rooms are good. But the staff, especially the guys at the reception are extremely unfriendly and angry all the time. If you have any question, they will always respond to you in the most unfriendly way you can imagine. The hostel is quiet at night, except of the night receptionist which is sometimes listeninh to music or video on his phone with speakers up to 100%. I booked for three nights, but only stayed one. There are a lot of nice hostels around (selina, latina, la cigale) and I would recommend to go to one of these. But stay away from Check Inn Hotel. The only really positive thing about it is the terrace, but there are actually no people up there at all and the hostel is boring in general. When you get back to the hostel after 10pm, you might have to wait for 15-20 minutes until a sleepy receptionist opens you the door and asks you some stupid questions. In the end, these guys work at a hostel/hotel, but they hate backpackers and don't care at all. Thanks for nothing Hotel Check Inn Cuenca!
