The relaxing and friendly Olga Studios Grounes (Kokkini Hani)
This was our 6th visit to Olga Studios between Gournes and Kokkinin Hani. Georgios and Stella are absolutely great hosts. Georgios picked us up at the airport, even though our plane arrived late at night, and when we got to the apartment he had put a couple of beers and some wine in the fridge in case we were thirsty after our journey.
The apartment has a bedroom, small kitchen area and a shower room all of which has been recently refurbished. The patio doors open onto a reasonable sized balcony overlooking the pool area. The kitchen has two hobs, a fridge, plenty of crockery and cutlery, washing up liquid, sponges and tea towels. Everything you need if you want to make your own meals. Shower gel and towels are also provided in the shower room but take your own beach towels with you. Stella takes the morning shifts and does a great breakfast, if you don’t want to make your own.
There is car parking available at Georgios’s mother house across the road but we do not hire a car preferring to either walk or take the bus. There is a bus stop, number 7, just outside the hotel and from there you can go into Hersonissos (Bus stop 20). Some buses run further into Malia and Stallis or change buses in Hersonissos to Sissi and Agios Nikolaos. The bus going the other way takes you to Heraklion.
It is about an hours walk to the Crete Aquarium, which would probably be quicker if we did not stop for refreshments and photo shoots along the way. You can walk a bit further into Gouves but we decided to take the bus and wandered down the main street which has more speciality shops than can be found in Kokkini Hani.
Most people staying here will go out for a meal. There are many restaurants and bars within easy walking distance around the area. When we chose a restaurant at the far side of the town, we were going to walk or get the bus, but Georgios insisted on taking us there. Stella also offered to take us to where we wanted to go during the day but we managed to make our own way.
Although the hotel does not have a restaurant Georgios makes great meals. There is no menu, you just let him know what you want, he sources the ingredients and demonstrates his superb culinary skills. If you are lucky his mother, who lives across the road, sometimes brings over a dessert. The Pool bar is usually open at night until the last person leaves and is a place where friends and family meet to watch sports on the large screen TV. Georgios makes sure that his hotel guests are not left out drawing them into the group conversations.
We didn’t see much of the two boys this year as they were at school but we certainly got to know Romi, the dog. Every morning, as soon as we opened the patio doors, Romi would be waiting, just below our balcony, to greet us. Maybe we should have been giving her a morning dog biscuit as now she will be expecting that from every guest in that room.
Our second week was to be spent in Piskopiano near Hersonissos and we had intended to get a taxi but Georgios decided that he would take us. We all bundled into his Pick Up truck, cases in the flat bed and he dropped us off at our next hotel.
Thank you Georgios and Stella for a great week and we are looking forward to returning again next year.

Don't bother with your money!
We stayed there for 7 nights. We arrived friendly people but the apartment is really not worth the money you paid. Air conditioning leaking all my husband's clothes were wet we reported this and they didn't do anything about it. Pool was full of sand. It's a long way from everything. Really not recommended you can book for better prices something that these apartments. Too bad about our money

wonderful relaxing break
We were made so welcome by the owners george and stella , they made our holiday a very enjoyable experience they are a very easy going couple.
they went above and beyond . Had some lovely home cooked food , hes a good chef ! moussaka was amazing .
5 min walk to the beach , and lots of food options locally.
this is a gem of a place and i cant wait to return next year.

Amazing experience, would highly recommend!
Great location, very accommodating, clean rooms, lovely pool and lovely owners! My girlfriend and I arrived late at night, starving with no food available anywhere nearby at the time, and the owner Jorgos ( spelling might be off! ) came to the rescue and made us a fresh, delicious pizza and offered us drinks and a very warm welcome. Could not speak highly enough about how great we were treated by him and his wife, very cute dog also called Romy was great! Would highly recommend to anyone looking for somewhere in kokkini Hani, very close to the beach ( 5 minute walk ) and very accessible to town with a bus stop right outside. Didn’t get the chance to say goodbye so wanted to say a very big thanks to Jorgos and his family for the wonderful experience.

Great holiday, thank you guys
Me, my wife & my two kids (8 & 15) have just returned from 2 weeks staying here & I highly recommend it, it was great & we will be going back.
Location:
5 mins walk to a nice part of the beach with places to eat & drink.
Bus stop (number 7) which pretty much goes then entire length of the island straight out side.
Shops, supermarket & places to eat are within a 10 min walk.
A cab from the airport to the hotel took about 10 mins & cost about 35 euro, had we of known the bus stops literally outside we would have got the bus for 8.20 euros.
We did get the bus back to the airport when leaving.
Hosts:
Georgios, Stella, their kids & Romi (dog) are all amazing, they bend over backwards to make sure you have everything you need & enjoy your stay.
I witnessed a French couple come back once with really bad sunburn, within minutes Georgios was on his mopped, down the shop & back with after sun which I might add he didn't ask them for the money.
He was always popping out & coming back with ice creams for my kids & bought me & my wife a few drinks.
Georgios is like a Greek version of Google, ask him anything & he will be able to help, we wanted to hire a car & told us to speak to him first as he would probably get a cheaper price than us.
We ate out most nights but Georgios cooked for us one night & I wish we had eaten with him every night, his cooking is amazing & far better than you will get at the nearby places which are basically aimed at tourists & tourist prices.
He was also very trusting & told me "I am always popping in & out so if you, your wife or kids need a drink & I am not here then just help yourself & keep a tally & we can settle up later" we found this perfect & really appreciated the trust.
Stella is also amazing, greeting us every morning with a massive smile & a "good morning" & again always happy to do whatever makes your stay better, her Freddo cappuccino is by far the best I tasted whilst out there.
Romi, what a lovely dog.
I really miss this dog, my son cried when we left because "we don't have Romi at home".
The dog is very well trained & will basically just lay about on the sunbeds unless Stella is around then he follows her.
He was always jumping up on my sunbed for a belly rub & cuddle, he does also like a little play, he was grabbing my hand in his mouth & trying to get it when I moved. He doesn't bite, just holds your hand in a playful way in his mouth.
Rooms & studio itself:
We did our research beforehand which when I read the negative reviews about Olga Studios it's clear those people did not & those negative reviews are not fair.
I wanted a traditional Greek, family run place not a 5* hotel where it's all "yes sir" blah blah & Olga Studios was exactly what I wanted & ticked the box.
The rooms have everything you need to live, air con, fridge, cooking facilities, beds, washing facilities, a table/chairs & a balcony.
If like us we were out most of the days & just using the studio to chill at night & sleep in this is absolutely perfect & does everything you need.
If you plan on staying in the hotel room for your entire holiday then A) Why bother going on holiday & B) probably not the place for you.
Music is normally playing & we were asked "What sort of music do you want on?" but I love all music so was happy with anything playing.
There is a tv behind the bar as well which normally has some sport playing.
On the days were we decided to have a lazy day & sit around the pool having a few beers Georgios & Stella would regularly bring us over snacks for with the beer. Crisps, cucumber & olives (grown in their garden) which were delicious.
There is an outdoor play area for kids which has slides, a little play house etc all covered with umbrellas.
However if your child is still a toddler or don't be an idiot & let them play or walk about on their own, there is a deep pool close by, brickwork & steps, use a bit of common sense.
Anyway thank you Georgios, Stella & Romi for a great holiday & we will see you again.
